Edutopia, an online source that highlights best practices for educators, recently polled
teachers and asked them how they do quick checks for understanding. The attached file contains numerous ways that teachers have used in their classroom.

This is quite an extensive list. I use many of them.
I use a self assessment system with numbers that I teach my students the meaning of. I sometimes include the self assessments on formative assessments and have my students to circle which one they are.
