What are your best tips for a new teacher? I’m on year 20 and these are still part of my teaching practice. What advice do you have?

Find a buddy teacher who can be your mentor and who you can use as a sounding board and venting partner.

Be realistic. Understand that this profession is like art. You are creating a craft that fits your style. Find your own voice. Build your confidence knowing that you are a forever learner and the students are with you on this journey.

Make sure that you do some self care activities. Take it one day at a time. Don't be too hard on yourself. Allow yourself to make mistakes because it is part of the learning process.

Join your teacher’s union and take advantage of their free professional development opportunities. Network with other new teachers. Ask us oldies for resources—we likely have a bunch of stuff we’ve created or accumulated that we would love to share with you!!! Ask your teacher friends at other schools to put you in contact with veteran teachers in your grade level.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Lean on the seasoned teachers - they are always glad to help and share ideas.
