What are some effective ways to integrate technology into lessons without overwhelming students or losing focus on the core content?

During math instruction, I like to use short video clips to help introduce a lesson. For example I have used a video with a singer using hand movements to represent counting by 5’s around the clock. I have also used quartet singers in a video from ABC mouse to introduce my students to the coins and their values. The songs are catchy and the students like to sing along. I have also used Kahoot to review a science lesson. The students like this because they are competing against each other to answer the questions correctly. This is a fun way to review and the class can see as a whole how well they performed on each question. In all of my examples that I used, I made sure the resources were of high engagement and properly aligned with my goals for each lesson.

I think my biggest suggestion is to minimize the number of platforms that teachers and students engage in daily. There are so many resources out there, intentionally choosing a few good platforms will in the end be the best for students.
I suggest 3-5 resources or digital platforms. Whether that be curriculum based or things like classroom dojo, keeping the number small will allow both the teacher and student to navigate proficiently.
Pick one tech tool and learn it. I would suggest Nearpod as an easy place to start. In Nearpod, you can access pre-made lessons or upload your slide shows. I use the teacher guided option so that all of my 4th graders are at the same place with me. I can see everyone's response and share responses with fellow students. You can ensure that everyone is engaged.
Another favorite of mine is Classkick. You can set the lesson to give immediate feedback on answers or toggle on and off as needed. I like Classkick for math because students can get immediate feedback and my teacher screen can show me which students need help.
I feel that technology has its place in a lesson. There are many different platforms that can be used by the teacher for instruction. While some teachers have their preferences on the type of presentation vs. interactive technology that engages the students. I have used Quizlet, Quizizz and platforms like these with the students for instruction. Since our district is a Microsoft district , I present these applications to the students and have them create presentations about the curriculum to share with the class.
