I have a couple of student teaching candidates that I am supervising right now and one of them is really struggling with grading 1st grade student work accurately. Do you have a grading checklist or other tool you use (or share/advise new teachers etc) that would be helpful for this teacher?

My general answer to this is for them to create a rubric that details what they are looking for in student work, and for them to create an exemplar for themselves.

However, it would be helpful to know more about the specific challenges the student teachers are encountering with grading 1st grade work. Understanding these challenges better will allow us to provide more targeted support and tools to address their needs effectively.

I like to have my students to self assess. I have used a 4,3,2,1 self evaluation. 1 means that I am beginning to understand and can't do it by myself. 2 means that I am starting to understand and sometimes need help. 3 means I can do it by myself. 4 means that I can do it by myself and teach others. I have never added a grade to each level, but it is something you could possibly do.

Rubrics all the way. Maybe use some exemplars and grade with them. We have the same writing rubric all year. Math varies by content. I’ve had lots of success just doing grading together.
